Not necessary, but (mostly) convenient.
More intuitive movie access than PS3 sixaxis controller, a reasonable price (especially relative to other PS3 hardware).
The STOP BUTTON, fast-fwd and rewind buttons don't operate symmetrically, lack of leymap customization.
Posted Mar 9, 2007 - I use my PS3 more for movies than games, so I bought this remote control as soon as it became available. It is a lot more convenient than the sixaxis controller (especially when you've got the lights down like when running the movie picture through a projector). There are two flaws with this remote's operation -- although I'm not 100% sure that they couldn't be fixed by firmware control patches on the system itself.
